LINKAce doesn't thank Simon, but seems quite pleased. Practicing with Rod, Ace sings That's All, and says he was very worried doing this music, as it's been sung by the best. As he practices, he waits for some nugget of approval from Rod, but Rod's not giving it up ... just yet. After he tells Ace he did the song better than he did, and that he has nothing more to say, feeling it was brilliant. Ace seems beside himself, saying to get a stamp of approval from Rod was the most fulfilling thing he could ask for. I don't think I have ever seen one unlikable thing about Ace during this entire competition. He just always comes off as so sincere.
Surprising us all, though, Ace comes out tonight in a suit! And that's not the best of it, as he has his hair slicked back in a bun. I haven't ever seen a bun like that on a guy before, except possibly the Mulan movie. Yet, it doesn't bother me. Actually, he looks like a mixture of John Travolta in Pulp Fiction with Mulan. It's ... appealing, if for no other reason than it's on Ace. Aside from his look, he sounds great on this song, and finds a tiny little spot to stick his falsetto in. But, I'll admit, my only comparison for this song is hearing it on one of my Leif Garrett albums. So maybe I'm not the best judge of this. But if Sam is proud of Taylor, Leif is proud of Ace. Although, interestingly enough, Leif looks more like Chris now, bald head, goatee, and all.
Randy loves the whole vibe with the suit and pulled-back hair, but as always, likes Ace's "false" even more, referring to it as his moneymaker. It's funny, though, as from my experience talking to American Idol fans, either people love the falsetto on Ace or they hate it. Personally, I'm with Randy. Paula, too, calls the falsetto Ace's backpocket token to whatever he wants. She says she knows all the Idols think they are putting us to sleep, but believes when they get home and watch their own performances, they'll realize how great they were. Hey, it's not just them. I thought I'd be falling asleep, but so far, this is my favorite week of all. All Simon has to do is say it wasn't bad, and Ace is so excited, shouting, "Yes! Woooooh!" Simon even goes so far as to call it a charming performance. Ace says he's going home to watch these good comments to him over and over again. And, I believe him.
