Sandy: Ace still perplexes me. I just don’t see what the hype is about. This was an interesting idea, to put a really different spin on a very well-known song, but as Randy would say, it was just OK for me. I didn’t like the falsetto at the end at all.
David: Barry Manilow might have thought we’d all melt for Ace, but I found myself echoing what I thought about Kellie: Eh, whatever. It just wasn’t exciting for me. I yawned. I guess I’m just not his target audience.
Tyler: The past two years, the money spot always went to the person in the bottom 3 (not 2) last week. The past two years, that person left next week. See ya at your elimination next week, Ace! It was better than average, but I wasn't completely thrilled. Then again, I don't exactly run the voting on this show, so he'll be back next week to get owned. Vocals: 21. Performance: 12. Other: 5. Total: 38.
Bruce: One thing to keep in mind when watching Idol is that you can’t “watch” a CD. The music and singing stand or fall without the benefit of the hot moves or the fancy clothes or the sexy smiles. For someone like Ace, that fact is like a big dark storm cloud on the horizon. Or at least it was. As I watched Ace’s performance it was as if his confidence and talent grew with each individual note. The transitions were flawless, the texture was like velvet, and by the final falsetto Ace had grown from a pretty face that could sing decently into a true vocalist. 9
