Some tidbits from Blogcritics:
2/17/06: Ace Young is 25 and hails from Denver, Colorado. He has a smooth, sultry voice and the fact that he oozes sex appeal only helps to make him a very complete package.
2/23/06: Ace Young sang "Father Figure" by George Michael. Very nice, although I don't really care for the song selection all that much. I think he nailed it, though. Kind of mesmerizing. It's kind of putting me in a trance. (Must vote Ace, must vote Ace...) Randy - "You worked the room and can really sing!" Paula did some monotone gushing (she's in The Ace Trance!) with a little helium hello. Simon - "Not the best vocal so far, you have the X Factor." He likes the choice of song. The judges seem to think that amongst the guys, Ace has it aced. Me? I think it's all subliminal. And, when I think about it, the song choice creeps me out a bit. It's kind of like the aura of Sting singing "Every Breath You Take" in his heyday.
2/23/06: Me, I thought Ace's performance — at least as it conveyed through the small screen — was surprisingly lifeless and his "working" (the camera, the room, the audience) bordered on off-putting. But never mind. The man can do the music industry equivalent of the Three R's: he can sing, perform, and look good.
Moreover, he has, so far, escaped the kiss of death — that kiss of death being labeled a "rocker" by the American Idol Powers That Be.
No wonder they call him "Ace."
3/3/06: I honed in on Ace Young in my first post and I still see him as winning this thing. Which is not to say he gave the greatest performance this night of the top ten because he did not. But coupled with this fellow's handsome face, casual but hip dress, and yes, his perfect teeth, Ace still seems to have it all in one handy guy package. I thought Ace showed some great vocals during his performance and Randy and Paula agreed. Simon did not.
3/10/06: Ah, my own favorite, Ace Young, did something really odd. Not that I didn't like it. In fact, that hat and his falsetto voice did manage to present this handsome fellow in a different light and showed us his vocal talent.
Ace sang a Michael Jackson song completely in a high falsetto. And it was okay, dawg, it was okay, as Randy would say. The judges like Ace's performance although Simon said Ace missed some high notes in spots. Ace's performance left me impressed but really hoping he won't try such a thing when he's in the running for the top three countdown.
