Top 6 - Andrew Lloyd Webber

With the disaster of musical theatre as a theme in the past, I was pretty annoyed that they were doing it again. Don't get me wrong, I was very familiar with all but one of the songs performed this week and I love some of them, but most of these people are not suited to the genre. Couple that with the inconsistent messages and instructions sent by the judges as to how to deal with a given theme (you are either blasted for not performing in a particular genre-based theme or blasted for performing said theme and not going outside of it - which is it people?), and it was not a prospect I was eager to embrace. Curtain's up -------------

Syesha - "One Rock N Roll Too Many" from "Starlight Express"

This was very sassy and fun. Oddly, not as vocally sound as some other songs she has done, but possibly the first time I was not bored silly and ready to fast forward if only I could.

Jason - "Memory" from "Cats"

His performance was very soft, sweet, lovely, emotional. Of course, Randy and Simon hated it as will many other people I am sure. Musical Theatre will never be anywhere in Jason's future, nor should it have to be, nor would I want it to be. He is in considerable danger of being eliminated this week, but I hope he will be saved so I can hear him sing 2 times next week.

Brooke - "You Must Love Me" from "Evita"

Yikes! She fumbled the start (explained later that she "lost the lyric"), and she had the band stop and restart from the beginning. Her vocals were rough and she was visibly nervous, as she has been for a few weeks. I like Brooke a lot, but she may have saved Jason with this. I was totally with Paula here - on Idol, you do not stop and restart. I was stunned that Simon said she did what she should have done; he just gave license for everyone else to do the same. These live shows are gonna get very long with all the extra time this will take. I might add - I think Brooke will be very relieved when she is eliminated.

David A - "Think of Me" from "Phantom of the Opera"

This was a very nice performance from the younger David. I did hear some uncharacteristic pitch problems in a couple of spots. I wouldn't be suprprised if it wasn't because he was concentrating on keeping his eyes open as Andrew Lloyd Webber suggested. Lots of singers close their eyes in parts of songs, so it never bothered me. I actually thought it showed the depth of emotion and effort the singer was putting into the song. Whatever. Well done. Safe as heaven.

Carly - "Jesus Christ Superstar" from "Jesus Christ Superstar"

Personally I was disappointed that ALW convinced her to drop the song "All I Ask Of You" from the Phantom because it is so beautiful. It would have given her voice a workout but I suppose lots of people would have been bored with it. But I digress -- I was not sure what to think about this performance, mostly because she was shouting and it put me off. It was a pretty good vocal all in all. However, she was smiling through a song that is angry - Judas is upset with Jesus. I love the entire score of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and after hearing it more times that I can remember, I have great affection for these songs, and this misinterpretation bothered me.

David C - "Music of the Night" from "Phantom of The Opera"

The low notes in this song were very problematic for David - they were not hit - but on the whole, this was very good. He hit the big notes. Since he is not likely to ever perform this again in the theatre or anywhere else, it passed muster on the night. Very enjoyable version of a song I love. I wasn't mad.

Only had a Bottom 2 this week.

The 2 Davids were brought out first and declared safe.

Next - Brooke and Syesha came out. Brooke was safe and Syesha was first named to Bottom 2.

Next - Jason and Carly came out. Jason was safe and Carly became the other singer in the Bottom 2.

Bottom 2: Carly and Syesha.

Eliminated: Carly

Carly had a great voice, but for some reason, I just never could warm up to her. Maybe this will be the break that finally pans out for her.
